Learn from sabotaging your ketogenic diet
Okay, so you’ve been doing keto for like ten days straight, but today you decided to eat a doughnut. Maybe in your mind, you had a reason to stray from the keto diet. Was it worth all those calories and not to mention carbs? So the short answer is yes! The long answer is also yes if that is the only bad thing that you do all day and even all week! If you stay on track for the rest of the day, and the week after the divulgence, then you are good! However, if after eating that doughnut, you continue to binge on bad carbs for the rest of the day, and for days to come, then that equals big-time sabotage!
For instance, not too long ago, I decided to eat two gluten-free biscotti( I mean, at least they were gluten-free and organic ). I thought to myself, “wow” I just sabotaged my whole plan to eat low carbs for the next few days! Then I thought it through more and decided it’s okay! I learned to forgive myself. It just means that now I have to do good after the divulgence! I think we get caught up and feel that we have to be strict all the time. I mean, yes, we do need to watch our carbohydrate intake and stick to a ketogenic lifestyle most of the time ( especially for the initial first 30 days). However, I feel like, in our mind, we have only so few willpower reserves!
If you didn’t make your initial 30 days of keto, it is okay
So, if you did have a reason to stray from the keto diet in the first 30 days, then it is important to forgive yourself and move on. If you did a strict keto for a week or more and then decided to blow it on the eighth day, then take some deep breaths and start again. If you are not familiar with why it is important to keep your carbs low for the first 30 days, then click here. Overall, the main reason you want to keep your total and net carbs between 20-30 grams is because you want to get your body into fat-burning mode or good ketosis.
Can I get back into fat-burning mode if I don’t make the initial 30 days of keto?
So, the next question that may cross your mind is this, ” Will I still be in fat-burning mode if I cheated on my keto diet after 30 days?”The answer to this question will vary on your direct body composition. Some people take longer to get back into ketosis than others. For example, if I go off track on my keto diet, it normally will take me a full day to get back into good ketosis. Now, I am not suggesting you compare yourself to me, but what I am saying is that it is possible to get back into good ketosis if you blow your keto diet on a carb-laden doughnut. The bottom line is if you ate that huge piece of birthday cake on a Saturday afternoon, get right back to your keto diet by Sunday!
After the initial 30 days of keto, pick two to three days a week to cycle in more carbs.
Okay, so after you have gotten over the fact that you”strayed from your keto diet” then it is important for you to push through a full 30 days of a strict keto. After the 30 days is up, you can then pick two to three days per week to add in more carbs. When you are ready to add more carbs to your keto diet, I suggest that you pick two days a week to increase your total ( or net), carbohydrate count, to between 100-150 grams. So, your keto meal plan will include four to five days of strict keto (between 20-30 total carbs) and two to three days of higher carbs ( which would be 100-150). Please refer to my keto-carb cycling article, here, for more information on this.
Eat colorful foods for chakra balance
When you finally do get to have your higher carb days, always keep in mind that you want to stick to colorful foods. When you consume foods in the rainbow, you will reap the benefits and reduce your risk of cancer, heart disease, lower blood pressure, and the chance of getting type 2 diabetes. You can also balance your chakras with these colorful types of foods. For example, if you eat foods that have orange hues such as sweet oranges and mangos, then you will help align your Sacral Plexus Chakra. Or if you eat root vegetables, such as turnips, parsnips, sweet potatoes, or rutabagas, then you can help align your Root Chakra.
Solar plexus chakra and will power
If you find that you are frequently going off track from your keto diet, I suggest learning how to balance your solar plexus chakra! This chakra is a small energy center that focuses on your willpower. If this is out of alignment, you will not want to be very compliant with a keto diet or any regimen! If you want to learn more about balancing, the solar plexus chakra, I suggest you listen to my podcast, which is called, “How balancing your solar plexus chakra can help with weight loss. “
Learn to forgive yourself and move on!
If you do go off track from your keto diet, it is essential to incorporate forgiveness. Remember that great song “Try Again” from Aaliyah? I know I’m taking you down memory lane (especially if you were a child in the 90s like me ). Some of you recall some of the lyrics going like this, “And if at first, you don’t succeed, then dust yourself off and try again!” This is such a powerful message to give to people! Perfect for a holistic keto goddess like you!
Learning to forgive yourself is probably the most important thing you can do when following any diet. It would help if you recognized that there would be times that you aren’t perfect. You’re not programmed (unless you are a robot) to always resist that delicious piece of cake full of carbs. It is all about moderation! In general, you should resist it, but if you don’t, that’s okay. You can make up for it tomorrow by restricting your carbs.
